Q & A With . . .

Lauren Westwood

Tell us a bit about yourself, who is Lauren?

Well I found this the hardest question. We are all so quick to put labels on ourselves but actually those labels are all that makes us who we are today, it is all part of the journey. I'm a wife to a very supportive husband, with 3 children. I'm self-employed which is the best thing for me as I want a job that works around my family & I am an inner rebel, I'm always late & I can't be told what to do, so luckily I'm my own boss. I'm very intuitive, I love all spiritual things & wellness, I love to dance like crazy in my kitchen. I'm very random, I will come out with the most random things at random times, keeps people on their toes, I guess.

How long have you been a beauty products expert?

I have been a Beauty Therapist for 22 years now! I've always been more interested in natural products but always found it difficult to find ones I loved, then I found Tropic Skincare which I've been an ambassador for 4 years. All because I couldn't stop talking about these products I'd found.

How do you assess what your client needs?

I offer free 1:1 consultations in person or if they live too far away I usually ask they send me a photo. I do ask questions, because sometimes problematic skin can be lack of something, medication or diet even can be looked at to help. I'm usually quite quick at knowing what can help their skin.

How long do your 1-2-1 sessions last?

That’s really up to the client. Can be anything from 15 minutes to 2 hours. I don't rush them as I know how important it is for them to get their skincare routine right for them & for them to feel confident with what they are using.

The beauty industry is saturated with all these beauty products that boast about the change they bring in one’s life. How does one select a product that is the right fit for them?

The beauty industry is huge!!! But actually, not many of them are as clean as they say they are, it's called 'greenwashing' but that's a whole other story, basically it's brands claiming they are something they are not. Tropic is leading the beauty industry & setting examples. It's very exciting to see that more beauty brands are following suit, going eco-friendly, carbon neutral, vegan & so on but you also want to know they work!!! Which is why I offer a free borrow bag service too. That way, you can see for yourself how the products will help your skin.

As the Senior Leader of Tropic, what does it entail?

This was never the plan, it just happened & I'm really happy it did & I will continue to grow my business & my team because I love supporting them. I'm leading by example. I’m supporting other self-employed women with their businesses, guiding them & I am here if they ever need me. Plus, I do arrange get togethers, training events & parties for us, which have blossomed some beautiful friendships. Honestly, I have the best team of girls, which I met all thanks to Tropic.

What experience do you need to be a senior leader?

None. Just being there for your team. It's like a big support network really, we are all there for each other. I really am doing a job I love, talking skincare, helping customers get their best skin & also helping women build a business for themselves, it's changed my life so much, and it's doing the same for them.

What do you enjoy the most in your profession?

The feedback from my customers, I just get the biggest smile still & that excited feeling when customers fall in love with the products. Then also as a Senior Leader, I get that proud mum feeling when one of the team do something they have never done before or achieve something etc. Being an ambassador is so rewarding.

What are the challenges you face in your profession?

In any self-employed business, it's the uncertainty of course but being self-employed for many years now, I know the pattern & I’m used to it. We are very lucky with Tropic that they don't have any targets. But the most exciting thing is, there's no limits either!

Are there any experiences that you can share that you found bizarre in your line of work?

Yes!!! I've come across 2 ladies now that use Shampoo to wash their face!!! What?!?!? I mean, how does that not sting their eyes???

Tell us a bit about your Facebook group W.I.S.E Collaborations and what is the main goal of the group?

Ahhh WISE is my new baby! Our networking group. My friend & I have recently set this up as I was quite new to networking but as I've enjoyed empowering women in my team, I wanted to expand that & help all women in business. I love matching people up in business that can collaborate, that I can see would work great together or can pass work on. I'm quite good at that, I've made so many contacts.

Do you have a morning routine to set you for the day?

My morning skincare routine sets me up for the day! I'm not even kidding, even pre-Tropic, if I don't cleanse, tone & moisturise, I'm not nice to be around ha ha! I get so agitated! But Tropic products all smell 'spa' like, essential oils are so uplifting & you feel all clean & fresh for the day...... with a coffee & a biscuit on the side.

What’s your go-to way of winding down after a long day?

Again, my nighttime skincare, which I switch from a moisturiser to an oil, called Super Greens. It's my favourite!!! It's a nutrient boost oil & I just love how healthy my skin feels. So that, then I spray my pillow with So Sleepy Pillow Mist. I don't struggle to sleep but it's such a cosy smell & really relaxed me, it has lavender, chamomile & frankincense, it's lovely! I don't actually like lavender either, but I love this! Then a Pukka Peace Tea!!! Bliss!

What is the one word that you want people to associate you with?

Glowtastic!

If you were not a skin care therapist, what would you be doing?

I would of loved to be a dancer, I loved dancing! I shouldn't have given it up. But I'd probably still be a Nail Artist & practicing Rahanni.
